Taking Care of Yourself Is Not a Luxury, but a Necessity: A Retreat for Foster Parents in Ternopil

On September 11–12, 2026, another retreat was held in Ternopil for 16 foster parents raising orphaned children and children deprived of parental care.

At the Orphans Future Foundation, we understand well that for parents to remain a source of support for their children every day, they also need care, time to recover, and support themselves.

Raising foster children is a great responsibility that requires a great deal of strength, patience, and emotional resilience. That is why, for the third consecutive year, our Foundation has been organizing these gatherings, where parents can put aside their daily concerns for at least two days, spend time among people who understand them, and simply take care of themselves.

For two days, the parents were cared for by the Foundation. They stayed in comfortable rooms at the Ternopil Hotel, enjoyed three meals a day, and had time to rest, connect, and enjoy meaningful moments that helped them step away from their everyday routines.

Together, the parents went bowling, watched a movie at Multiplex, walked around Ternopil, and spent time by the Ternopil Pond. Some enjoyed talking and connecting with others, while others simply had the opportunity to spend some time alone with themselves—without rushing, daily responsibilities, or the need to take care of everyone around them.

But the greatest value of the retreat was the time spent with psychologist-trainers Ira and Svitlana, who helped the parents connect with one another, talk about their experiences, better understand their own emotions, and support each other.

Because sometimes it is especially important to meet someone who does not simply listen, but truly understands what you are going through.

After two days, the participants spoke about having many positive impressions, renewed energy, and a desire to meet more often—at least once a month—to take a break from everyday concerns, connect with other parents, and receive the support they need.

Why do we do this?

Today, families who are willing to welcome and raise orphaned children need special support. In the conditions of war, uncertainty, and constant emotional stress, fewer families may feel ready to take in and raise children who have lost parental care.

That is why, for the Orphans Future Foundation, it is important not only to help children find a family, but also to do everything possible to support the family after a child becomes part of it. A retreat for parents is one of the ways we do this. When parents have strength, support, and the inner resources they need, they are better able to support their children.

We sincerely thank our donors and partners, thanks to whom these retreats have been possible for the third consecutive year.
