On the verge of independence life

Very often, graduates of care institutions find it difficult to understand the need to earn and save money, as well as how to manage their own budget to have enough to meet their needs and wishes.

This weekend, 10 high school students from the Ternopil Children's Home and the Berezhany Lyceum practiced these skills learning from their mistakes to develop an understanding and ability to manage money.

Thanks to the volunteer coaches Oleksandr Sokhatskyi, Olya Khilko, Ania and Denys, the children were able to take part in various scenarios organised into small groups. The children found the experience interesting and were able to share their thoughts on the whole experience afterwards. Key learning points included

- the history of money.

- how to create a budget.

- how to allocate money earned to different needs each month.

- the importance of building a financial cushion.

- the importance of spending less than you earn.

- that money that comes easily, is rarely valued and often wasted.

- the different sources of income possible.

- to prioritise needs over wants.

- working towards a goal of saving 10% of any income each month.

- about credit and cash, and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

In addition, attendees prepared their breakfast and dinner each day. They were giving cash with which to buy ingredients at the local supermarket after designing a menu for meals. The goal is to teach them practical tasks like this to help with independent living.
