From 8 to 9 July 2015, fourteen graduates of state-run orphanages aged 15-25 years, had the opportunity to relax in beautiful natural settings and at the same time learn about the cultural heritage of the western region of Ukraine.
During July and August, students in Ukraine are in search of interesting ways to spend their holidays. The youth from orphanages, those who deprived of parental care, have limited opportunities for quality recreation during summer time. However, due to the organization and support from caring volunteers of Orphans’ Future, the orphans had a wonderful two days on the Dnister River and visited the village of Rakovets, in the Ivano-Frankivsk Region of Ukraine.
The Dnister is one of the biggest rivers in Ukraine, which begins in the East Carpathian Mountains and as it flows in an easterly direction forms the administrative border between the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi provinces of Ukraine. The most interesting and picturesque part is the Dnister Canyon which contains unique landscapes with steep rocky or forest banks with many ancient rare plants as well as many species of birds and animals which make their homes there. There are also interesting landforms and geological features such as layered cliffs, islands, caves and small waterfalls from which flow “girlish tears”, all of which add to the unique beauty of this location.
The orphans had the opportunity to see these amazing sights while cruising along the river and there were also several stops along the way allowing them to have a swim in the Dnister River, take some photos and just soak up the awesome beauty of nature. Overnight they were able to sleep on the boat which was well fitted out with bedrooms and kitchen facilities, but several of the more adventurous orphans got closer to nature by sleeping in tents on the river bank. The next day the boat took them on a two hour journey to see the beautiful nature of forests and rivers of the Carpathian Mountains, and the historical Rakovets Castle and majestic waterfall.
All these had a positive impact on the health of young travellers. Everyone was rested and refreshed and took away unforgettable memories of their summer holiday on the river in 2015.
