Leadership and Survival Skills Camp for Orphans

On the weekend of September 19-21, twelve pupils from Berezhany orphanage boarding school spent three days at an outdoor camp in the forest. The children were taught basic outdoor survival skills such as how to start and maintain a fire, outdoor cooking, erecting tents as well as leadership skills. The camp was the brainchild of a former pupil of the school and now Orphans Future volunteer, Mikhaylo Koroliov, aged 18. For Mikhaylo, (called Misha for short), it was his first organized event for children from his orphanage. His great enthusiasm and eagerness to help the orphans led to a well-planned, interesting and informative program for the children. Rain during the time of the camp added to the challenge and provided an opportunity for students to learn about resilience and adapting to cope under difficult conditions. It was pleasing to see all the students persevere and pass this part of the survival test with flying colors.

The students returned to school with a sense of achievement and a greater confidence in their ability to solve problems in the future, and were given photos as a reminder of their great experience. Now Mikhaylo is already thinking about planning some new projects for the orphans.

Orphans' Future is thankful to the private supporters who provided meals and equipment for the camp. Tents and sleeping bags were provided by the Rotary Club of Rouse Hill, Australia.

Orphans' Future is also thankful to the Director of Berezhany Orphanage Boarding School for his understanding and support of youth initiatives and for his help in implementing this program.
